The fastest Tonbridge trains reach London Bridge in 32 minutes. Journey times to each terminal, walk-up fares, season prices and station parking.

Tonbridge is one of the better-connected commuter towns in west Kent, and the reason is simple: it sits on the South Eastern main line, so trains to London Bridge are direct, frequent and quick. The complications are which terminal you actually want, what the ticket costs once you add parking, and the fact that London Charing Cross has been shut for most of this August.

Everything below was checked against National Rail timetable data for a standard weekday in the current timetable, and against the operators’ own ticket and parking prices.

London Charing Cross and Waterloo East are closed from Sunday 26 July to Sunday 16 August 2026, for 22 days. Southeastern is spending £20 million on the approach: 1,800 metres of new track and 16 sets of switches and crossings between Charing Cross and Waterloo East, a rebuild of the country end of the Charing Cross platforms, and structural repairs to the 175-year-old Hungerford Bridge. While it is shut, Tonbridge services that would normally run to Charing Cross are going to London Victoria, Cannon Street, Blackfriars and London Bridge instead. Two further weekend closures follow: Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 August, and Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October.

The journey times below are for the normal timetable, which resumes on Monday 17 August.

The practical reading of that table is that London Bridge is the fast option and Charing Cross costs you about ten minutes more, because the same train continues through Waterloo East. If your office is nearer Victoria, Tonbridge is the wrong station for you, and West Malling or Borough Green will be quicker (see below).

Frequency is four to five trains an hour through the morning peak. Between 06:45 and 08:45 on a standard weekday there are departures at roughly 06:48, 06:56, 07:07, 07:16, 07:20, 07:50, 07:58, 08:07, 08:20 and 08:30, all reaching Charing Cross in 44 to 50 minutes. Off-peak it settles to about four an hour.

Cannon Street is the peak-only quirk. Direct Cannon Street trains run in the morning and evening peaks (07:46 arriving 08:31, and 07:54 arriving 08:38, for example). Ask for Cannon Street at 10am and the journey planner will route you via London Bridge with a change, adding fifteen minutes for no benefit.

Borough Green and Wrotham is the quiet winner in that table: it is the cheapest Anytime Day Return of the six and reaches Victoria in under an hour without a change. Snodland and Aylesford pay the most and take the longest, because the Medway Valley line runs across the county rather than into London.

These are the standard adult fares on routes not valid on the Southeastern high-speed services:

Advance singles start at £8.30 off-peak if you book ahead for a specific train. The gap between the £40.70 Anytime Day Return and the £19.20 Super Off-Peak Day Return is the single biggest saving available to an occasional traveller from Tonbridge: leaving after the morning peak more than halves the price.

If you are going into central London and expect to use the Tube or a bus, compare the £28.80 Off-Peak Day Travelcard against the £22.90 Off-Peak Day Return plus pay as you go. Two Zone 1 Tube journeys close most of that £5.90 gap.

The cheapest ticket is genuinely cheaper, about £1,170 a year less than the standard season, but read the restriction before you buy it: it is valid only for travel via Redhill, which is the slow way round through Surrey rather than the fast line through Sevenoaks. It suits a small number of people and nobody who wants the 32-minute train.

For most commuters the number that matters is £5,556 a year, or £533.40 a month, for a London Terminals season, which buys any of the four terminals above.

Station parking, the cost people forget

Tonbridge station’s car parks are run by APCOA on Southeastern’s behalf. Car Park A alone has 258 spaces, 20 of them accessible. Current tariffs:

  • Tuesday to Thursday: £10.30 a day. Monday and Friday: £9.80.
  • From 10:00: £8.90. From 18:00: £4.50.
  • Saturday: £7.40. Sunday and bank holidays: £5.80.
  • Season parking: £42.60 a week, £156.80 a month, £1,616 a year.
  • Blue Badge holders park free, but must register the vehicle in advance through APCOA’s Blue Badge portal.

Put the two together and a driving Tonbridge commuter pays £7,172 a year: £5,556 for the season ticket and £1,616 for the parking season. That is the real figure to weigh against a house price, and it is worth setting beside the £403,227 borough average when you are deciding which side of the borough to live on.

Getting to Tonbridge station without driving

The castle sits a ten-minute walk up the High Street from the station, which gives you the geography: the station is at the southern end of the town centre, on Vale Road.
